Potential

You have chosen to be with

A man of potential

He has little to his name

He just has potential

Youth and strength

Truth and charm

These are the gifts

Of a man of potential

A man of potential has chosen to be with

You

You have little to your name

But you trust his potential

Youth and beauty

Grace and support

These are your gifts

To a man of potential

What Makes Us Happy

“I never won a worm before”

At eighty-six

She joyfully adds

Another

To her menagerie

“Me neither”

But I have

Sixty-two more years

To win a worm

And be happy

Like her

Jane?

Have you ever forgotten

Something?

I have.

Have you ever forgotten

Something really, really important?

I did.

Have you ever forgotten

Something so important

That your heart pounds in your throat?

I will.

I forgot

Someone’s name.

It was not

One of those things

That made my heart pound in my throat.

But the person whose name I forgot

...what’s her name...

Thought it was a very big deal.

Meeting The President

When I met The President of the United States I said,

“Boy it sure is nice to have a President who can

speak in complete sentences.”

The President smiled and said to me,

“That’s not all I can do.”

Then I said,

“Boy it sure is nice to have a President who can

create positive relationships with foreign leaders.”

The President smiled and said to me,

“That’s not all I can do.”

Finally I said,

“Boy it sure is nice to have a President who can

lead and inspire the entire nation with a message of hope and change.”

The President smiled and said to me,

“That’s all I can do.

The rest is up to you.”

Know

Today I decided to write a book

The title of which I already know

It’s catchy and short and you’ll want to look

When you see me on the cover of Know

What Know is about I think you may know

Because I know that you know what I know

And to know Know is to know what we know

And what we know is known by those who know

You know the things that must be known to know

And thus you know what I know, what we know

The stuff which makes up the things that are known

Know know know know know know know know know know

Know is one of those words that looks really

weird when you read it over and over

Ignorant

Sometimes I ignore people

Because I don’t like them

Sometimes I ignore people

Because I like them

Sometimes I ignore people

Because they are ugly

Or they smell bad

Sometimes I ignore people

Because the game is on

Or I’m tired

Sometimes I ignore people

Because I am sure I am right

And they are wrong

Sometimes I ignore people

Because their beliefs are stupid

And mind are not

Sometimes I ignore people

Because I am awesome

Talking Point

Can you see me standing
In the crowd?

I’m the one with the Mathematics degree.

I realize you probably can’t see
my Mathematics degree,

I just wanted to find a way to drop that in the conversation.

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

Wearing an oversized college sweater

Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail

She danced across the hardwood floor

In white socks

Mercy

Laughing at my insecurity

Her smile audible from across the room

She pointed a finger at me

And bit her lip

Mercy

Knowing exactly what I wanted

Her excitement barely contained

She sat on the couch with me

And we watched HGTV for 5 hours

We shared two pizzas that night

Unexpected Insecurity

Hello old friend

It’s been a long time

What have you been up to

Oh wow

How did you get into that

Are you still with

I see

I am

I’m in Chicago

It’s great

So much to do

Expensive as hell

Great theatre

I’m letting my hair grow out for a part

I don’t always look like this

I’ve been growing the beard for a week

Also for a part

I don’t always look like this

You look good

Lost weight

I should try that

I always look like this

Dinner Conversation

Last night I went for a drive

in the town where I grew up

I was searching for my past life

I knocked on Grant’s door

hoping to paint the town red

     but nobody answered

I knocked on Jack’s door

expecting a night of poker

     but nobody answered

I knocked on Luke’s door

and his mom answered

I ate dinner with his parents

Last night I went for a drive

in the town where I grew up

And I learned how to grout tile

My Future Garden

I

am waiting

I

was told

I

have to

wait

I

have to

wait

wait

for my potatoes

to grow

I

am waiting

Beware the Macaroni Man

Last night I left

The macaroni in the pan

And so, bereft,

It contrived its great plan

And while I slept

It grew into a wild man

And then it crept;

Every obstacle overran

At dawn

The Macaroni Man

Stood over my bed

And he said

to me:

Last night you left

The macaroni in the pan

And so, bereft,

I contrived my great plan

And while you slept

I grew into a wild man

And then I crept;

Every obstacle overran

At dawn

The Macaroni Man

Stood over my bed

And I said

To him:

I’m Sorry.

The Story of Flatman

Flatman walks

in a flat world.

It has

no depth.

Flatman sees

only what is in front of him.

He stares

at the velociraptor.

It stares

right back.

The attack comes

from the side.

Flatman is alive

when they start to eat him.

Home Alone

Fortunately

for me

I get to be

naked

When the roommates are gone

I get to be shirtless

pantless

and underwearless

When the roommates are gone

I get to browse the internet

the sites

that are also underwearless

Fortunately

for me

no one can see me

naked

The Big Idea

Joel Kristofferson waited

For his big idea to come...

It came.

They said it was a waste of time

Waiting for his big idea to come.

He was too many years out of 5th grade

To have big ideas.

Joel Kristofferson knew

His big idea would come...

It came.

And he sold it on ebay

For $17,000.

Joel used the money

To buy a used Toyota Camry,

To install a beige tile backsplash for his kitchen sink,

And

To pay down his credit cards.

growing up

i was ankle-deep in lead-based paint

there were sparking wall outlets piled up to my knees

  knives neatly covered my thighs

my belly and back were caked in cleaners and cosmetics

two hot burners covered my chest, making me look like madonna

chinese toys were piled high in my arms

my hands held bottles of prescription drugs

a telephone cord was wrapped around my neck

my mouth was full of mercury fillings

there was bug spray in my nose

          the internet in my eyes

and black widow spiders were nesting in my hair

until i met you
